03The SWPBS Project continues!

The University of Pitești (UPIT) together with the Argeș County Inspectorate (ISJ) has carried out a second round of data collection within the project, between 3.11.2020-13.01.2021, in all 30 schools from the Argeș County that are participating in the project. The data were collected online through questionnaires for teachers and students in 3rd and 4th grades and will be used to measure the effects of the PBIS methodology (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) which was implemented in these schools in the first two years of the project, a methodology by which school staff was coached, trained and supported on how to assess the contextual setting events and environmental conditions and incorporate practices and resources to increase the probability of appropriate behaviour of students.

Data collection in this round went more difficult due to the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic: the inability of project teams to access schools and interact face to face with respondents, the complete transfer of the teaching activities of the schools within the online environment, that loaded the daily schedule of students and teachers and thus made the period required to collect data last longer than the initial estimate, the existence of problems regarding the stability of the internet connection or the smaller number of newer generation digital devices to be used to complete online questionnaires. Despite these challenges, 352 valid questionnaires were collected from teachers and 2121 from students. After collection, the data encoding process followed between 14.01-11.02.2021, in order to process and interpret data and perform comparative analyzes, regarding the progress in the students’ positive behaviors of pre- and post-PBIS intervention.

The project activities continue and aim to provide further training to school staff and to support schools in developing materials that model values across the school (e.g., respect, safety, responsibility) and appropriate behaviors (e.g., respect means use kind words and actions) for all students and for all areas of the school (for example, in the classroom, in the hallways, in the spaces designated to spend the breaks).
